Welcome to our third installment of our ongoing series – ‘Doing Good’, where we interview and profile some of our favorite people + organizations in the non-profit sector.

We recently had the chance to work with Homegirl Catering, a subsidiary of Homeboy Industries for our recent Point B Summit in Los Angeles. I wanted to put a shout-out on our blog for anyone looking to cater a conference, an office lunch or major event in LA.

Homegirl Catering is a women-run venture whose mission is to help formerly gang involved and previously incarcerated men and women become contributing members of society. By hiring Homegirl for our event, we were simultaneously able to make a social impact at the same time – which is what we love about this local organization.

We had a lot of different dietary restrictions to work with and Homegirl truly delivered. We were able to select vegan options and ended up with an incredible spread of sandwiches, chips, homemade salsa, salad, citrus dressing, and some of the BEST chocolate chip cookies I have ever tasted.

Our guests were equally impressed and we would most definitely hire Homegirl Catering again.

According to Homeboy Industries, the catering and cafe business is where, “Young men and women are placed in what is often their first “real job,” learning to work side by side with their former enemies and gaining fundamental job skills in a supportive environment. The café assists high-risk and formerly gang-involved young women, and a few young men to become contributing members of our community through training in restaurant service and culinary arts.”

Participants in the program complete an 18-month training certificate program where they cycle through experience in the cafe, catering, and in maintenance. During this time, they receive support from a case manager while attending weekly classes related to restaurant operations, management, and life skills.

100% of the proceeds go right back into Homeboy’s programs and helps transform the lives of former gang members.
